During December, Holy Family piloted a set of Chromebooks in their building.
Holy Family School, Camillus

Background:
Holy Family was considering buying Chromebooks for their students, since they only have one computer lab and no other student devices. Sister Christina wanted to know how the Chromebooks might be used in the classroom. We brought in a set for the 5th and 6th grade teachers to use.

Lesson or Project: 5th Grade State Project

 How it Works:
Google Slides is Google Apps for Educations presentation tool. It works just like Power Point. What's nice about Google Slides is that the students can insert any picture from the web just by searching right in Slides. They can also work on it on a Chromebook, in the computer lab, or at home on their computer.
 Curricular Connections:
Students learned about one of the 50 states; each researched a different state. They then added their research to slides, included pictures, and even a video! Then, they presented their slides to their classmates to show them what they learned.

Lesson or Project: 6th Grade Ancient Greece Project

How it Works:
Prezi is an online presentation tool that is very different from anything you've seen before. Users have a canvas and can add content like images, pdf files, videos, and text to the canvas. They group the content and order it however they want. The user then choses which content is displayed when. The presentation zooms around the canvas to show the content. It's really neat! Oh, and the best part - students can work on it at the same exact time but from two different computers!
 Curricular Connections:
In small groups of two or three, students researched aspects of Ancient Greek culture. They used Prezi to present their research findings.  They collaborated on the Prezi in real time on their individual Chromebooks. Mrs. Shifflet brought me in a few times to teach the students how to use Prezi and then again to offer advice and follow up on any "how tos." They then presented their content to the class.
